Home for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses November Gathering

Madeleine welcomed all the returning members and new members joining the meeting, then asked all members to give brief introductions of themselves and their work.

Special Mention:

Michael Wong – Journey to set up a new company

Michael used to work with the University of Waterloo Foundation in Hong Kong.  This summer, he left the Foundation and started his own business in September.  A company called “Maple Consultancy” and now for only 3 months, Michael has successfully connected University of Waterloo with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to set up a research lab in Hong Kong with a support funding of HK$500 million from the Hong Kong Government.

Special Welcome to those who attended the Entrepreneur and Small Business Committee meeting the first time:

Rick Wong                                        Founder & Strategist, RWN Solutions

Ken Chow                                        Managing Partner, {embrace} worldwide

A returning member, Andrea Springmann shared her experience to join the Canadian community, which it is very diverse and it is definitely a two-way street for people in Canada and Hong Kong to interact.

Andrew said everyone should give back to the community.  Other key reasons for people to join ESBC include reaching outside the circle and expanding own network; meeting new friends and establishing business partnership. And this is a dynamic committee.

  1. For the next meeting on January 15, 2019: Madeleine invited members to volunteer to give a presentation in each meeting (wherever it is possible) to follow ESBC’s long-standing experience-sharing session: “HOW I STARTED: HOW I MADE IT (OR STILL MAKING IT”).

This is for each member to discuss challenges and solutions to problems in setting up their own business

Our first volunteer:

David Andrews                                Managing Director, Chunky Onion Production Limited

2. Madeleine asked members to consider a new type of activities for the Committee – Site Visit. The meeting decided to visit two to three start-ups in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. Eric Cheng, and Thomas Wong volunteered to coordinate with two start-ups.

Present in this meeting in November included:

Madeleine Behan                           Co-Chair, ESBC

Andrea Springmann                       Leisure, Travel & Tourism Professional

Andrew Jones                                 Sanctuary Resorts

Brian Brown                                    Consultant, Tai Hung Fai Group

Launching and Growing a Business Successfully Part 3

From a Concept to Funding to Where Are We Now,
Where Do We Want to Go:
The Journey of the Solerìco Foundation

 Wednesday, June 27, 2018
New Signature Series 2018/2019 Sponsored by Baker Tilly Hong Kong

The Entrepreneur and Small Business Committee (ESBC) organized and presented our Signature Event of June 2018:
Launching and Growing a Business Successfully Part 3

Solerìco is a renewable energy non-profit organization based in Hong Kong. With your help, Solerìco promotes and invests in green technologies, bridging the gap between communities with energy needs and the governments, corporations, communities and individuals who want to cut out fossil fuels and make a change in the world. Join the event to hear about Solerìco’s mission, challenges, and future plans moving forward.

Martine Vanasse – Board Secretary of Solerìco (Head of Control Room & Investment Banking and Capital Markets Compliance, Asia Pacific, Credit Suisse) A lot of businesses are seeing opportunities for their senior management to be involved in volunteering. We will hear how and why Martine has got involved in Solerìco.

Jack Wagner co- founded Solerico Foundation in March 2017 with Caitlin, his wife, to manage and finance renewable energy projects that cut out fossil fuels and alleviate poverty on a non-profit basis. Through Solerico, which has since grown to a team of eight volunteers, they have financed solar power projects in Nepal and begun developing renewables projects in Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea. Jack grew up in Hong Kong and attended university in the USA. Outside of Solerico, Jack is a political risk analyst at Nardello.

Caitlin Spencer, co- founder of Solerico Foundation had a vision to combat the effects of climate change and help disadvantaged communities gain access to clean, and reliable electricity.  This is the reason that together with Jack, they co-founded Solerico Foundation. While both Caitlin and Jack work on the day to day aspects of Solerico, Caitlin focuses her efforts on finding and fine tuning the projects in Nepal whereas Jack tends to focus on projects in Hong Kong.  Caitlin grew up in Hong Kong and graduated with a double major from the University of Toronto and became certified as a nutritional advisor and personal trainer in the UK. Outside of Solerico, Caitlin is a freelance personal trainer.

The Seminar had the full support of the Entrepreneur and Small Business Committee and attended by several of the committee members including the new Vice-Chair (Internal) of the Chamber, Joseph Law and Sophia Chan-Combrink, the new Executive Director of CanChamHK

On behalf of ESBC, Co-Chair Madeleine presented a Certificate of Appreciation and Thank You to Martine, Jack and Caitlin.
